Programme profile


Nursing integrates into the fabric of society. The unique role of the nurse involves one to one interaction with patient/clients and their families resulting in great personal job satisfaction. The nurse plays a central role in the health care team.

The School of Nursing and Midwifery promotes personal, professional and academic development through the provision of college and practice-based learning. The aim of the programme is to foster the development of knowledge, skills, attitudes and professional values.

The programme in General Nursing equips the nurse to provide nursing care in a wide variety of clinical settings including hospitals and the community. The programme emphasises the importance of working with other professions and of planning individualised nursing care in partnership with patients.

The emphasis of the general programme is on caring, communication and understanding the patient

Year 1: Professional Learning and IT Skills for Nursing; Interpersonal Skills for Nursing Practice; Fundamentals of Nursing Knowledge and Skills; Health, Public Health Nursing and Health Promotion ; Anatomy; Physiology; Developmental Psychology for Health Care; Sociology of Health Care; The Foundation of Contemporary General Nursing; Infection Control Issues for Nursing Practice

Year 2:Therapeutic Interpersonal Skills and Social Psychology for Nursing; Nursing Practice in Drug Therapy; Food, Nutrition and Health for Nursing Practice; Physiology; General Nursing with Adults and their Families in Specific Contexts; Nursing with Individuals Peri-operatively and in Wound Care

Year 3: Nursing Professionalism: Trends and Issues; Teaching and Learning for Nursing Practice; Introduction to Research:Principles and Methods; Social Policy and Health Care; General Nursing with Adults and their Families; General Nursing with Individuals and their Families in Specific Contexts; Nursing Individuals with Mental Health Needs

Year 4: Health Promotion for Nursing Practice; Nursing Science; Nursing Research: Principles and Methods; Organisational Management in Nursing; Legal Aspects of Professional Nursing; Nursing Ethics; Multiculturalism, Gender and Social Policy

Progression


On successful completion a graduate is eligible to apply for a professional registration (RGN, RPN or RNID) with the Irish Nursing Board

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics and a language other than English.

Students must present A-Level, at Grade C, in either a Laboratory Science subject, Mathematics or Applied Mathematics
