Nutritional Science as a subject focuses on food as it affects our health and is concerned with the provision of food and nutrients to the body to facilitate optimum physical and mental development and maintenance of health throughout a lifetime.The role of food and nutrition in the balance between health and disease is of concern to us all. Nutritional Scientists have an increasingly important role in advancing our knowledge of the relationship of diet to health through research, and applying that knowledge to the provision of nutritional advice to the public as well as providing safe, wholesome and nutritious food to consumers.

Programme content


The First Year of the programme involves the study of Biuology, Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, Applied Psychology and Nutrition.

The Second Year provides students with a strong foundation and introduction to Human and Animcal Nutrition as well as to other Biological Sciences such as Biochemistry, Microbiology, Molecular Biology and Physiology in addition to Food chemistry and Biostatistics.

Third and Fourth Years principally focus on aspects of human nutrition, including physiological functions of nutriets, effects of nutriet deficiencies and excess, nutriet composition and safety of food, relationship of food intake to health, impact of genome on nutriet needs as well as research projects in the area of nutrition. Other areas of study include toxicology, immunology, sensory science, forumalation of public health policy.

Entry Requirements


Students must present six subjects of which two must be at grade C or above at Advanced GCE (A-Level. The other subjects must be at least at grade C or above on GCSE or Advanced Subsidiary GCE (AS) papers. The six subjects must include: English, Mathematics and a language other than English.

A-Level required, at Grade C or above, in Maths and a Lab Science.
