Art theory, research and experimentation all play a prominent role within your study programme.

Art exists within a network of cross-references: the artist reflects upon the world at large. Within the Fine Art study programme, you will be learning to define and redefine what art is – or can be – in relation to society. You will be developing your artistic talent through a versatile training in all aspects of the profession: applied artistic research, concept development, ‘making’ skills, communication and presentation of your work, as well as entrepreneurial skills specifically relevant to the domain of the arts. This way you will become a creating pioneer, working on your own self-directed visual research projects.

You will delve into art theory and history in connection with current discourses within the arts, research of the artistic practice, learning and experimenting with various ‘making = thinking’ skills, writing as a (visual) medium, developing and presenting your ideas, collaborating with fellow art and design students.

After graduating you will be qualified for working through social, commercial or autonomous contemporary art platforms; become a maker and/or mediator in the arts; a curator or a cultural organiser; a social researcher using artistic means and methods; or a master-level student in fine art, media technology, cultural management or artistic research.

Programme content

You will be developing your artistic talent through a versatile training in all aspects of the profession: applied artistic research, concept development, technical skills, as well as communication, presentation and entrepreneurial skills specifically relevant to the domain of the arts. Art theory, research and experimentation all play a prominent role within your study programme. You will also learn to work collaboratively and to organise and document your activities in quarter projects that address all dimensions of the profession. You will be working on formulating a personal artistic plan together with your tutors. You will be focusing on the international side of the profession, on your current artistic practice, or on continuing your studies at the master level. You may also gain further international (work and learning) experience through an exchange programme with one of our partner institutes in cities such as Berlin, Marseilles or Vancouver.

You have chosen a demanding profession: in addition to talent, it also requires a great deal of affinity with visual arts, and a strong sense of tradition combined with the will to experiment. After graduating, you also have the option of continuing your studies at the master level, for example at the WdKA’s Piet Zwart Institute.
