Programme profile

Codarts prepares its dance students for a professional career as dancer. By emphasising excellence, Codarts aspires to educate highly qualified dance artists who can find work in the international employment market.

In the studios of Codarts, as well as our own top teachers, there are always dance professionals from the Netherlands and abroad at work as guest teachers or choreographers.

Students gain ample stage experience through performances, theatre tours and festivals, and through internships at well-known dance companies with which Codarts has close ties. Students are also able to take part in exchange programmes with other prominent dance schools in Europe and the USA.

The programme is built up of six components. For each component you follow different modules. The six components together constitute the different aspects of a dance artist’s professional practice. Throughout your study you will follow education modules in:
a. dance technical training and performance practice,
b. creative development,
c. theoretical subjects,
d. educational theory and practice,
e. professional health and well-being, and
f. optional modules.

Programme content

The first two study years of the programme comprise basic training, which focuses on acquiring the necessary technical dance skills. During the two-year basic programme, the emphasis lies on training in ballet, modern dance, jazz dance (jazz and trends), improvisation and composition. During basic training you begin to rehearse repertoire by (guest) choreographers. The programme pays specific attention to the health and well-being of the dancer.

After the first-year, the programme  includes a daily lesson in ballet and modern dance (Graham, Limón, Cunningham, Laban Based Modern Dance and Modern Jazz). In addition to your own teachers, you will often work with guest teachers, who are professional dancers..

Gaining insight in how to work with improvisation and composition is also part of the study programme. This stimulates the development of your own creativity and personality as a performing dancer.

During the programme, you will acquire stage experience by participating in Codarts-produced performances.

In the fourth year, you can serve an internship  with a professional dance company or pursue an exchange semester abroad.
