Programme profile
This programme is about game design, game development and how games are implemented to achieve specific objectives. You will work on game concepts, 2D and 3D artwork, game development and game evaluation, adjusted in line with current developments in the curriculum. While working in a team, you learn how you can turn a game concept into a final product and how to involve the end user in the development of the product. There is extra emphasis on research, innovation, intercultural communication and entrepreneurship. Furthermore, you will work on developing specific professional skills needed as a game designer, game artist, game developer or game evaluator.
Programme content
In the first year, you are introduced to the core components of game design: mechanics, dynamics and aesthetics. In the first semester you master basic skills like game concepting, visual design, scripting and project management by designing and developing an entertainment game in a project group. The second semester is completely focused on serious game design. You will follow an assignment from an actual client and design an educational game.
In the second year, four 10-week themes are used to delve deeper into the world of game development:
Game Design: you will research your target audience and create game concepts. You will learn the principles of game design and further develop specific skills such as concept development, creativity, project management and paper prototyping.
Game Art: you work on the visual design and 3D assets for your game in 3D Studio Max and Zbrush. Atmosphere, design, style and visual effects in 2D and 3D play an important role.
Game Development : you will learn about developing the interactive elements of the game. You will develop and implement gameplay in a game engine and use software such as Unity3D and programming in C# to produce a prototype.
Game Evaluation: you will evaluate player experience and gain insight in the relation between choice in design, art and gameplay and the effect that it has on players.
From the third year, you will be able to choose your own study path. You will complete an internship in the Netherlands or abroad at a company that suits your learning objectives. Additionally, you have the option to specialise in a subject that you find interesting by choosing a minor, either in Groningen or in another country. Electives include 3D & Animation, social media or photography. As a minor you could choose Game On, Applied Psychology or Art & Technology.
The fourth year is built around your graduation assignment. You will look for creative solutions for a complex communication problem with the help of interactive media. In consultation with companies and university faculty, you complete an innovative graduation assignment. During the year, you will follow theoretical modules in subjects related to Game Design & Development.
