The University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) was founded in 1999, after the merger of three educational institutions: the Academy of Agriculture and Technology, the Pedagogy College and the 450-year-old Warmian Theological Institute. Its seventeen faculties educate almost 31 000 students: in a wide range of disciplines: humanities, pedagogy, theology, fine arts, law, veterinary medicine, agriculture, engineering, biology, economics, mathematics and, since the academic year of 2008/2009, medicine. The University has a 230 hectare campus in Kortowo, a picturesque part of city, surrounded by forests and lakes
